The impact of Coronavirus on streaming services

More than a third of the global population is on Coronavirus lockdown. India, China, France, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, and the UK have implemented the world’s most restrictive mass quarantines.

No industry has been left untouched by the crisis of the Coronavirus pandemic. The streaming industry is undergoing major changes. Many people are working from home and others are binging on multi-media contents on streaming services to kill the time. Therefore, streaming service providers are facing an oversupply of content to provide their viewers. Apparently, this has caused a heavy load on the cellular network across the European Union.

To improve the situation, the commissioner of the European Union Internal Market, urged Netflix and other over-the-top players to lower the video content quality from 1080p (High Definition) to 480p (Standard Definition) for a limited time and Netflix has agreed to do so on a period of 30 days. By doing so, high-speed internet will be available for people to gain access to information on Coronavirus and also to complete their official work online.
